Your register is yours.

This policy explains how Oakline handles information when you use the Oakline app. Oakline is developed by Adam Metzler in Maine, United States. Oakline is designed to keep your financial records under your control: you do not create an Oakline account, and Oakline does not operate an analytics, advertising or account server that receives your register.

The short version

Oakline does not collect analytics, advertising identifiers, bank credentials or the contents of your register for the developer. It does not track you across apps or websites, sell personal information or use your records for advertising. There is no Oakline user profile.

Information the app handles

To provide the features you choose to use, Oakline may handle the following information:

Register information: books, accounts, balances, transactions, payees, categories, notes, scheduled items, tags and related settings that you enter.
Receipts: images you scan with the camera or select using Apple’s photo picker, plus searchable text recognized from those images.
Optional precise location: when location suggestions are enabled, Oakline temporarily reads your current location and can remember coordinates associated with a payee. Location is never attached to a transaction.
Purchase status: Apple provides Oakline with the entitlement needed to decide whether paid features are unlocked. Oakline does not receive your card number or other payment details.
Preferences: settings such as appearance, reminders, app lock, backup destination and whether location suggestions are enabled.

Where information is stored

Oakline stores your data on your device by default. The developer cannot see or retrieve that local data. Information leaves the device only when you choose a feature that requires it:

Share & Sync: if you enable it, Apple’s iCloud and CloudKit services store and transmit the selected book between your devices or the people you invite. Invited participants can receive the financial records and receipts in that shared book.
Backups and exports: Oakline writes data to the folder or share destination you choose. That may be iCloud Drive, storage on your device, or another file provider. The selected provider then handles those files under its own privacy policy.
Purchases: Apple processes purchases through the App Store and StoreKit.

Receipts, camera and photos

The camera is used only when you choose to scan a receipt. The system photo picker is used only when you choose an existing image. Receipt text recognition runs on your device so you can search printed words. Oakline does not send receipt images or recognized text to an Oakline server. Receipts are included in a backup, export, synchronized book or shared book only when you choose that feature.

Location suggestions

Location suggestions are off until you enable them in Oakline’s Privacy & Security settings and grant iOS permission. Oakline uses precise location only to learn that a payee is associated with a place you have visited and to suggest that payee when you return. It makes no map or place-lookup request, and it does not attach a location to a transaction. Learned coordinates remain in local Oakline data and any backups you create; they are deliberately excluded from shared-book synchronization.

You can stop all future location access by turning off “Suggest payees from where you are” in Oakline or by revoking Oakline’s location permission in iOS Settings. You can erase the coordinates Oakline has learned with “Forget learned locations” in Oakline’s Privacy & Security settings.

Face ID, Touch ID and notifications

If you enable App Lock, iOS performs the biometric check. Oakline receives only whether authentication succeeded and does not receive or store your face, fingerprint or biometric template. If you enable due reminders, Oakline schedules notifications through Apple’s notification system. Reminder text names an item but does not display its amount on the lock screen. You can disable these features in Oakline and revoke their system permissions in iOS Settings.

Service providers and other recipients

Oakline contains no third-party advertising or analytics SDKs. Depending on the features you choose, information may be processed by Apple for iCloud, CloudKit, App Store purchases and system services; by a file-storage provider you select for a backup or export; or by a person you invite to a shared book. Oakline does not authorize any of these recipients to use your register for advertising or tracking. Service providers acting for Oakline are required to protect information to at least the level described in this policy and as required by applicable law. Their own terms and privacy policies also apply.

Retention and deletion

On your device: records remain until you delete them in Oakline or delete the app and its data.
Learned locations: they remain until Oakline automatically drops an unreliable place, you use “Forget learned locations,” you delete the related data, or you delete the app and its data.
Backups and exports: these are separate files and remain until you delete them from Files, iCloud Drive or the provider where you placed them. Deleting Oakline does not delete those files.
iCloud and shared books: information remains according to your iCloud settings and Apple’s retention rules until you delete the book or its records, stop sharing, or remove the corresponding data from iCloud. A person who previously received an export or other copy may retain that separate copy.
Purchase records: Apple retains App Store purchase records under Apple’s policies. Oakline stores only the entitlement necessary to unlock the app.

Your controls

You can export or delete records and receipts, stop sharing a book, turn off synchronization, change or disable backup destinations, disable reminders and location suggestions, erase learned locations, or revoke camera, location and notification permissions in iOS Settings. Because Oakline has no user account or developer-operated data server, there is no server account to delete and the developer ordinarily has no copy of your records to return or erase.

Children

Oakline is a general-purpose personal finance utility and is not directed to children. Oakline does not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Changes to this policy

This page will be updated if Oakline’s data practices change. The effective date at the top identifies the latest revision.
